7/1/2009 - Electric Rates Decrease
As most people know, TVA is our wholesale supplier and we pay the price that TVA sets for electricity. In October 2006, TVA implemented a way to recover costs of a volatile fuel market. They created the Fuel Cost Adjustment (FCA). The FCA will change quarterly and has nothing to do with the base rate that TVA charges for electricity. Every quarter TVA’s FCA will change the price of their electric rates and HUB passes along the increase or decrease to our customers. However, in October 2008, TVA increased its base electric rate by 3% and the FCA went up by 17%. This effectively increased everyone’s utility bill by 20%. The Harriman Utility Board chose not to pass along the 3% base rate increase to our customers.
But in every quarter since then, TVA has slowly lowered the FCA to return their rates to approximately what they were before the large adjustments in October 2008, not including the 3% increase in the base rate. The latest FCA was decreased by 3% and this will be in effect for your July bill.
